Chapter 20

Khin May returned from her snack break and took the game off pause. Ahva awoke in the inn. As predicted, they had arrived in Nkamo as the sun set. Naturally, all the businesses were closed in the marketplace so after a decent meal at The Puzzled Potato, where they’d stayed before, they’d turned in early.

Ahva paced the length of the headboard while Osse dressed. She had taken an inventory of Osse’s bag when he’d sorted it at Vehira’s place. Coming up with roughly fifteen hundred coins and enough to buy a book might be tricky. With some luck, Osse’s good reputation in this town would ensure more favorable trading. Otherwise, she feared this errand running would take far too much time. At some point, they had to get to the main quest. Maybe. If not, the game designers needed their heads examined. They probably did anyway.

As soon as Osse was ready, they went downstairs for a quick but hearty breakfast of eggs, porridge, cheese, and bread.

“Let’s find out what we need for the book first. Once we get that in the works, we can lighten this bag.” He patted the satchel that hung over his shoulder. “How does that sound?”

“Good idea!” Ahva flew up to Osse’s shoulder. If you do it the other way, we might have to find that scribe’s fishing hole.

Osse strode out of the inn. “I thought you might agree to that.”

Five minutes later, they entered the scribe’s shop. The set of books about Ilion’s plans for world domination were gone. Osse checked out the ones that took their place. They had green covers and gold-embossed writing.

“Pre-Massacre Legends, Before the Fall of Man, The Age of Power: The Days of Mechanical Men.”

Weird. So, was this “fall” of mankind before or after Ilion’s plans for world domination?

The scribe entered from the back room. “I didn’t expect to see you back here so soon.”

“I have an urgent errand, and you were the first person I thought of who might help me finish it.” Osse walked over to the scribe’s desk.

“What’s the problem?” The scribe sat back.

“I need a copy of the law of Tsidkenu,” Osse said.

The scribe frowned. “And what would you need that for?”

“I’m trying to secure shelter for homeless old lady. We have a place in mind, but the owner insists that she needs the law of Tsidkenu.” Osse leaned his palms on the table. “Can you help with that?”

“If you bring me the book, I’ll copy it for you.” The scribe stared past Osse’s shoulder. “I’m fairly certain our library has at least one copy that you could borrow long enough for me to make yours.”

Library. The one that’s overrun with rats, spiders, and glowing worms? That one?

Osse winced. “That might be tricky. I’m sure you’ve heard about the vermin that were attracted by the food stored there against a siege.”

The scribe nodded. “I know. Unfortunately, you won’t find a temple to Tsidkenu here. You might find one in Vanya. In fact, I’m sure you would, but I’m told the locals aren’t keen on visitors from Bakhar.
